Getting to know Sadiya Dhanani, MD
Dr. Dhanani completed medical school at the Medical College of Georgia before moving to the Bay Area for psychiatry training. She successfully graduated from Stanford’s Psychiatry Residency, and then completed further specialized training through Stanford’s two-year Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship. During her time at Stanford, Dr. Dhanani completed additional training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, parent management therapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy. Dr. Dhanani cares deeply about connecting with her patients and understanding their life experiences in order to provide the most effective and supportive care plan for them. She is committed to culturally-informed care and is always open to learning about what is most important to her patients and their wellbeing.

1. What is your approach to working with patients?
Dr. Dhanani understands the vulnerability involved in seeking mental health care. She seeks to learn about her patients holistically and considers what is most important to them and their wellbeing, and she likes to collaborate with patients to work on goals for their care. Dr. Dhanani utilizes medications as one part of a patient’s treatment plan. Medications can be helpful for many patients when used with specific goals in mind to improve symptoms and overall wellbeing. Dr. Dhanani works with patients to help them understand the rationale, benefits, risks, and alternatives of a medication before considering a medication change. She values patients feeling well-informed and comfortable before making decisions about medications.
3. What do you believe is the most important part of the healing process?
Providing a space for each person to feel genuinely understood - their goals, values, anxieties, vulnerabilities — this has always been the most important and the most rewarding part of the healing process in my work as a psychiatrist.
4. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, Dr. Dhanani enjoys reading, trying out new recipes and restaurants, hiking and being outdoors, and spending time with her loved ones.
