Dr. Justin Trop, M. D.
Adult Psychiatrist
I was first drawn to psychiatry as a healing practice — a field, as I see it, focused on deeply understanding human distress and simultaneously seeking to help individuals thrive through reflection, self-realization, and values-driven change. I bring this perspective and a curiosity about individuals’ stories and life journeys to my practice. Along these lines, my approach is one that is empathic, sees your intrinsic potential for growth, and challenges you to expand your perspectives. It focuses on your holistic self, meaning that together we will explore dimensions such as your identity, relationships, internal narratives & beliefs, patterns of behavior, values & choices, sense of meaning, connection to emotion, and unique experiences of adversity. This approach is also informed by my experiences working with diverse populations.
Treatment wise, I am integrative and collaborative, with an emphasis on talk therapy, social connection, meditation & spirituality, and lifestyle interventions, such as dedicated focus on nutrition, physical activity, and sleep. My view on medications is that they are one potential tool we have in a multi-faceted treatment approach. Along with the above, I have an interest in complementary and alternative medicine as well as the burgeoning research on psychedelics in mental health. In terms of psychotherapy, I have experience in existential-humanistic and psychodynamic approaches, cognitive behavioral & acceptance and commitment therapies, prolonged exposure, and couples therapy. I have also co-facilitated group therapy for physicians and prior participants in psychedelic clinical trials. Ultimately, my goal is to work collaboratively towards your goals, along the way building insight into how your heart and mind work, enhancing your sense of agency and well-being, and moving towards meaning, purpose, and fulfillment.
