Karim Mohammed Lotfy, M.D.

Dr. Karim Lotfy is board certified in both; Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He completed his medical training in Cairo University, Egypt where he received outstanding honors. He completed his psychiatry training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas where he was chief resident and received many awards for his exceptional performance and dedication to training, research and education.

Over the past decade Dr. Lotfy has developed a refined expertise in working with all psychiatric disorders in the adult population, he is an expert in psychopharmacology/medication management and meticulously monitors medication effects while informing his patients of what to expect from their treatment.

He has developed a specialty in working with mood disorders and addictive disorders, the latter includes substance use disorders where he favors a gradual harm reduction approach. He also likes to work with other behavioral addictions such as video games, social media, compulsive sexual behaviors, workaholism, and others.

Dr. Lotfy has also developed a unique expertise in De-prescribing, which is the planned process of reducing or stopping psychotropic medications that may no longer be of benefit or may be causing harm. The goal is to reduce medication burden or harm while improving the overall quality of life. This is of particular importance in the geriatric population, cases of polypharmacy (multiple medications) or individual preference.

Dr. Lotfy generally emphasizes the importance of psychotherapy in treatment outcomes, he utilizes supportive psychotherapy, teaches different meditation techniques, and encourages the development of spiritual awareness which is frequently necessary for general mental health. He is enthusiastic to work with all different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
