Dr. Lymaries Velez, a compassionate and experienced psychiatrist, brings a wealth of expertise to our outpatient psychiatry clinic. With a focus on general adult psychiatry, Dr. Velez holds special interests in adolescent and geriatric mental health, as well as conditions like schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, and dementia. Dedicated to comprehensive care, Dr. Velez incorporates cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic psychotherapy into treatment plans, recognizing that holistic and thorough treatment extends beyond medication management.


Drawing from extensive training at the University of Florida, including undergraduate studies, medical school, and general adult psychiatry residency, Dr. Velez also brings a robust background in research. With a commitment to personalized care, she takes into account each patient's unique circumstances, including medical comorbidities, particularly excelling in consult-liaison psychiatry. Outside of work, she enjoys exploring the world with her husband, indulging in hobbies like gaming, reading, crafting, and caring for their three feline companions and houseplants. 1. What is your approach to working with patients?


See below. I heavily integrate psychodynamic approaches in both my therapy sessions and medication management. 


2. How do you integrate medication management?


I strongly believe in shared decision making with patients. I get to know the patient closely so I have a good understanding of what their goals are in treatment and what their biggest concerns are with side effects. We then work together to tailor medication option that would best fit their personal circumstances. 


3. What types of concerns do you specialize in treating?


Trauma, psychosis, anxiety, depression.


4. What do you believe is the most important part of the healing process?


Connecting and being present with patients as fellow human beings. 


5. What kinds of clients do you work with best?


I work with patients 14 and above. I am particularly experienced with patients experiencing psychosis and trauma symptoms. 


6. Do you have experience with trauma or PTSD?


Yes, I have extensive experience working with patients experiencing trauma or diagnosed with PTSD.


7. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?


Playing with my cats, hanging out with my husband and working out.
